TELECOMWORLDWIRE-6 November 2007-Technology and wireless companies announce development of open Android platform(C)1994-2007 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com
The development of Android, reportedly the first truly open, comprehensive platform for mobile devices, has been announced by an alliance of technology and wireless companies, including Internet search engine company Google Inc, mobile communications provider T-Mobile, technology company Qualcomm, wireless and broadband communications company Motorola and HTC, a smartphone manufacturer.
The companies, along with others, have collaborated on the development of Android through the Open Handset Alliance, a multinational alliance of technology and mobile industry companies. The alliance aims to foster innovation on mobile devices and improve the experience for consumers, with Android giving developers a new level of openness to work more collaboratively and speed the introduction of new mobile services for consumers.
The Android platform will be made available under a developer-friendly open-source licence giving device manufacturers and mobile operators substantial freedom and flexibility to design products. The alliance plans to release an early access software development kit next week to provide the tools needed for developers to create new applications for the platform.
Android is expected to place developers, wireless operators and handset manufacturers in a better position to introduce new products to market more quickly and at a lower cost, with more personal, flexible mobile experiences for customers.
More information about the Open Handset Alliance, including details of its 34 members, is available at http://www.openhandsetalliance.com
