Vic: Presbyterians fail in school control bid
Victoria's Presbyterian Church has lost an attempt to gain more control over one ofMelbourne's elite boys' schools, Scotch College.
Supreme Court judge DAVID BYRNE has refused to consider the church's request for aruling on the eligibility of recently appointed school council members.
At issue was whether non-churchgoer and Shell director JOHN SIMPSON should be on thecouncil of the 150-year-old boys' school.
BRIAN BAYSTON, a Presbyterian member of the council, objected to Mr SIMPSON'S membershipon the grounds he didn't have a vital church connection.
Mr BAYSTON said during the trial he had concerns over the number of churchmen on thecouncil when it became time to appoint a new headmaster.
The Supreme Court action brought by Mr BAYSTON is the latest tussle in a 25-year-oldpower struggle between the Church and the school council for control of the college council.
